MAGICK DEFENCE
How to defend against mages? They can invent things on the spot and you might wonder "How the heck do I defend against that?"... Below we have the answers. If the spell negatively affects your character and you have no obvious way to resist the spell (such as a dodge, willpower, block, parry roll) then the attack absolutely can be treated as a pattern attack even if it is not technically, by the book a pattern attack. If its got no avoidable delivery (You can't dodge a case of entropic bad luck for instance) then pattern can be used.

There is no circumstance in which a character can not roll some sort of defence. This applies to bad luck that plagues your character from an Entropy effect, to life attacks that transform you into something else.
This page ALWAYS tops any passage contained within the mage rules, that may give the impression the effect is unavoidable.
Unavoidable = God Mode, and that is not something we allow.

PATTERN DEFENSE
Pattern Defense is classed as an extended contested roll.
MAGES MUST DECLARE THE TARGET OF THE INTENDED PATTERN ATTACK (notifying the target) AOE PATTERNS ATTACKS ARE NOT POSSIBLE!

Each turn a mage rolls against your pattern, you roll your pattern against the mage.

ESSENCE POOL: Is SENDABLE GLAMOUR/SPENDABLE PATHOS/SPENDABLE FAITH/QUINTESSENCE/BLOOD POINTS/GNOSIS POINTS

In some situations the POOL may be higher than the RANK. In these situations use your POOL rating as you are particularly reinforced.

If you CONSENT to having your pattern rewritten for non hostile or beneficial reasons, do not roll at all and let the mage accumulate successes for the change they want.

Patten attacks should be thought of metaphorically as trying to unravel and reknit someone's sweater while they are wearing it! NOTE: Each sweater is different, and put together in a unique way, trying to unravel and reweave multiple sweaters is a feat beyond the scope of Nocturne Mages. If rewriting your own pattern permanently is a god like feat then unravelling and weaving multiple patterns within one effect is SPHERE 6-10 territory (I.E permanently beyond the scope of Nocturne Mages)

They can feel something tugging on the strand you have got hold of, you are connected to them, so they can follow the thread you are pulling, they can follow that thread through any opening you have created (negating wards, you have to create exceptions to wards, that thread that connects you and the target is part of them, not part of you, pulling that thread through the ward means pulling the entire sweater and wearer through that ward!) They can -cut- the thread by closing a door on the reality you inhabit, (Jumping to another plane of existence) Severing your connection to them, and of course, depending on the material of the thread, they can resist the damage to their sweater. "Metaphorically" speaking.
