Everybody dies with unfinished business. For most people, it’s not enough to keep them from moving on to whatever’s next, be it Heaven, Hell, another incarnation, or the eternal void that is Oblivion. But for a few, the pull of things left undone is enough to keep them tied, however tenuously, to this existence. These are the Restless Dead. These are wraiths. Simply put, wraiths are the spirits of the dead who, for whatever reason, have not moved on from the trappings of their lives. Some cling to the things, places, and people that they love. These things, called Fetters, bind them to the lands of the living and anchor them against the insatiable pull of Oblivion. Others have come to terms with their ghostly existence and have continued to dwell in the Underworld long after all the countries they once dwelt in have crumbled to dust. Suspended between life and death, wraiths must deal with the challenges of their new existence. They may choose to stay close to the lands of the living, interacting with the so-called Skinlands and haunting those who yet draw breath. Others move into the deeper Underworld, taking a part in — or taking up arms against — Stygia, the ancient empire of the dead.

  • The underworld is simply the kingdom of the dead, it is far removed from the land of the living. It is not possible for the living to observe the dead who exist in the underworld and vice versa. The underworld location in Nocturne is BARATARIA BAY.

SHADOWLANDS & SKINLANDS

  • The shadowlands is the ghostly world just beyond the shroud, it sits directly superimposed upon the Skinlands. In terms of nocturne metaphysics this is simply the penumbra, it resembles the world of the living, with only minor alterations such as long demolished buildings existing as their memory has not yet faded. For example, in the shadowlands of New York City, the Twin Towers still stand.

  • You may encounter other beings made of spirit stuff traveling though it, vampires astrally projecting, Garou sidestepping on their way to the spirit wilds or human projectors exploring or spying on the living.

  • Those who exist in the penumbra are invisible to those who exist in the material world and they are -mostly- incapable of manipulating objects that exist in the material world. Wraith can see through the shroud, they can listen through the shroud, there are some powers they have that can affect things through the shroud.

  • When In the Shadowlands, the wraith IS geographically in the corresponding location in the Material World. However they are intangible and invisible. (Unless they use Arcanos. through the shroud or are rendered incorporeal) 

  • A wraith in the sim areas of nocturne should by default note on their titler that they are "IN THE SHADOWLANDS"

  • Only those with Mediumship or the ability to see wraith through the shroud will be able to notice a wraith in the shadowlands. If a wraith manifests using embody, then his titler should note that he is fully visible to normal perception.

  • The SKINLANDS is a term that simply means, the material world, the world of the living, mundane real life world that we as human beings exist in, on a day to day basis.

  • IF your wraith is NOT using EMBODY, they are in the SHADOWLANDS when on main sim. ONLY EMBODY allows a wraith to be seen in the Skinlands. (Various other characters may have shroud piercing abilities, but normal folk won't)

                                                                                STATES OF BEING                                                                              

A wraith's body is known as its Corpus and consists of Plasm it functions very differently from bodies made of flesh and bone as it is spiritual in nature.

There are three states a wraiths body can take. Corporeal, Incorporeal and Material.

                                                                                                 CORPOREAL                                                                                                 

 

  • This is the default state for a wraith in the underworld and in the shadowlands. It is solid to objects that exist in the underworld and objects that exist in the shadowlands.

  • Any damage from native objects and native underworld characters, that exist in the Underworld and Shadowlands are resolved as normal attacks that can inflict Bashing, Lethal and Aggravated damage. A wraith heals these damage types at the standard human rate of healing.

  • Because the Shadowlands is directly superimposed over the Skinlands a wraith can be harmed by objects in the Skinlands. Standing on a busy road in the shadowlands means that vehicles in the Skinlands can potentially run a wraith down.

  • Whenever a wraith is unfortunate enough to be hit from an object in the Skinlands (usually an AOE attack) it takes ONE BASHING damage (regardless of damage type it would normally take, unless the damage SPECIFICALLY states it attacks spirits) and is rendered Incorporeal for 1 turn per dot of STAMINA  the wraith has.

  • AOE attacks originating from the Skinlands CAN NOT  be avoided. They automatically cause ONE BASHING damage and trigger Incorporeal mode. So long as they target the area the wraith is in. (Difficulty 10+ for attacker) Five Successes on this AOE will cause the wraith to suffer FIVE BASHING DAMAGE and trigger Incorporeal mode.

  • NOTE: AOE attacks may come in the form of many different things, A spray with a fire extinguisher from the skinlands can cause as much damage as a spray with a sub machine gun in the shadowlands  with enough successes! Terrified mortals who are on the offensive tend to fling things at phenomena they do not understand.

                                                                                               INCORPOREAL                                                                                               

 

  • A wraith only loses Corporeality if damaged by something in the Skinlands.  When a wraith is Corporeal and suffers damage from an object in the living world, they become Incorporeal with respect to the Skinlands.  Their form immediately becomes misty, translucent, and indistinct. (This effect is observed in the Skinlands!) Incorporeal wraith can not take damage from the Skinlands while Incorporeal. They also can't affect the Skinlands in any way while incorporeal! (This is basically a mutual bind, can't be hurt, can't hurt anyone)

  • Incorporeal wraiths are still solid with respect to the Shadowlands; a wraith can be run over by a truck in the Skinlands and rendered Incorporeal one turn, then impaled on a Legionnaire’s sword from the Shadowlands  for 3 lethal damage the next.

  • Wraiths can choose to become Incorporeal voluntarily by walking through a wall or a door. This renders the wraith Incorporeal for the normal amount of time, (1 x STAMINA turns)  and causes 1 BASHING DAMAGE to the wraith.

  • Note that this only functions with respect to objects and barriers in the Skinlands; Shadowlands items damage and impede a wraith normally, and do not trigger the Incorporeal state. By way of example, a bullet fired in the Skinlands would inflict only 1 bashing damage and cause the wraith to become Incorporeal, but a ghostly bullet fired in the Shadowlands would inflict lethal damage, and the wraith would remain Corporeal

                                                                                                    MATERIAL                                                                                                  

 

  • A wraith can only assume this state through the use of the Embody Arcanos, though some whisper that other supernatural creatures possess their own ways of granting versions of it. Speaking only for the Embody Arcanos, however, this means a wraith is fully physical in the Skinlands, able to interact with it like one of the living. As a being of solidified emotional energy, it can be injured by attacks, same as the living.

  • While Material, he does not turn Incorporeal in response to Skinlands threats. While in this state, wraiths are still subject to attacks and damage from the Shadowlands.

                                                                                                    SKINRIDDEN                                                                                             

 

  • Skin riding allows a wraith to inhabit a mortal host. While riding a host a wraith is immune to damage from the shadowlands, unless that damage can damage the host. The wraith suffers like for like damage along with the host. A skin ridden person is therefore 2 targets for the price of one. If the host suffers 1 bashing the wraith suffers 1 bashing, if the host suffers 2 lethal, the wraith suffers 2 lethal and so on.

  • The inhabit Arcanos. allows a wraith to possess a machine or device. If the item is destroyed the wraith is ejected and suffers 1 lethal damage.

                                                                                                    THE SHROUD                                                                                            

SHROUD THICKNESS RATING

The shroud is the veneer that separates the Skinlands from the shadowlands, generally trying to affect a target in the Skinlands from the shadowlands presents additional difficulty to an wraiths roll. Simply add the rating to your difficulty.

NOTE: This additional difficulty only applies if you are on one side of the shroud trying to affect the other. Skinlands to Shadowlands / Shadowlands to Skinlands. (You are corporeal trying to affect material or vice versa!) Some Arcanoi such as EMBODY always  require shroud rating.

  • SHROUD RATING IS ZERO IN THE UNDERWORLD (BATARIA BAY) FOR WRAITH/SPECTRES/PLASMICS OF THE UNDERWORLD.

  • SHROUD RATING IS 10 IN THE UNDERWORLD  FOR EVERYONE ELSE.

  • The underworld as a whole is a mixed bag of metaphysics. For Wraith traveling from shadowlands to the underworld requires navigating the Tempest. That has its own Argos Systems. Other species navigating from shadowlands have to deal with the Tempest and its effects, but also understand the shroud thickens for their species as they enter deeper into the underworld
