WRAITH

The Restless Dead

 PASSIONS & DARK PASSIONS

  • On character creation you have 10 points to spend on Passions and 10 points to spend on Dark Passions.

  • You MUST spend all 10 points.

  • Each passion has a strength rating from 1-5.

  • Each dot of passion strength costs 1 point.

  • You could for example have 2 x  Strength ◉◉◉◉◉ passions OR  5 x Strength ◉◉ passions , You may have a maximum of 2 Strength â—‰ Passions.

  • On the chart the virtue and sin entry exists as a guide to polar opposites and nothing more. Each passion needs a polar opposite dark passion.

  • A good "healthy" balance for purchasing passions is 1 Strength ◉◉◉◉ passion, 1 Strength ◉◉◉ passion, 1 Strength ◉◉ passion and 1 Strength â—‰ passion. Though you can mix as you chose, Strength â—‰ passions require indulgence every scene so you could be overwhelmed if you take more than 1 Strength â—‰ passion, and you may end up losing them entirely due to Harrowing's for neglect.

  • 2 Strength ◉◉◉ +1 Strength ◉◉◉◉ is the ultimate safe bet as far as passions go requiring 2 indulgences a day.

  • Dark Passions do not lose strength, even if the wraith passion it is tied to do does!

  • Combined Passion dots can never exceed 10, Powers that give passions only work if the wraith has less than 10 dots.

  • When you construct your shadow its goals are to destroy your goals. It is deeply personal, it is out to wreck your afterlife. YOU and YOUR goals are the target of its PASSIONS. It does not merely do things your character disapproves of, it does things that shock your character to the core. It never attacks things or destroys things you don't care about. It's not going to haunt a local university and do dastardly things to strangers because you disapprove of that behaviour. Generally we expect DARK PASSIONS to be NEGATIVE emotions. Positive DARK PASSIONS, simply are disallowed as they fly in the face of what the shadow is all about.

  • Now say that your Passion was LOVE, and that it was built around your mourning (and living) girlfriend, and you just wanted to watch her and look out for her.... Your SHADOW might now haunt that university pretending to be your ghost and telling your mourning girlfriend that you never really cared for her, or maybe convincing her that taking her life and joining you on the other side of the shroud will be the happily ever after you both deserve and that if she really ever loved you, she would do it!  You know, real nasty stuff, especially considering that even contacting your girlfriend is against the Dictum Mortuum and likely to get you destroyed, it presents numerous other problems for your character. Especially if the shadow convinces your mourning girlfriend to take her life. It has effectively destroyed your passion and thrown you into a passion harrowing and put you at risk of of being hunted for breaking the Dictum Mortuum. Did we tell you your shadow hates you, yet?

INDULGING IN PASSIONS

Indulging in passions are vital for regaining pathos. There are two ways of Indulging in a passion, directly or vicariously.

DIRECT INDULGENCE (Direct Adherence to your passion goal)

Whenever the wraith performs an action DIRECTLY related to his passion  and feels the emotion detailed in the passion description he may roll his passion.

FREE ACTION

ROLL:         RELEVANT  PASSION STRENGTH

DIFFICULTY: 12+

SUCCESS:   Every successes grants the wraith 1 point of pathos. This wraith cannot gain more than 10 PATHOS this way.

LIMITATIONS: A wraith may only do this  ONCE PER SCENE

VICARIOUS INDULGENCE (Feeding off the emotions of mortals who share the emotion of your passion)

A wraith may also attempt to regain Pathos if he is near a mortal experiencing strong emotions of the same nature as one of his Passions. These “second hand” feelings are much harder to tap into, however, making them a problematic source of Pathos.

FREE ACTION

ROLL:         RELEVANT  PASSION STRENGTH

DIFFICULTY: 16+

SUCCESS:   Every two successes grants the wraith 1 point of pathos. This wraith cannot gain more than 10 PATHOS this way.

LIMITATIONS: A wraith may only do this  ONCE PER SCENE

INDULGING IN DARK PASSIONS

There are two states by which a Shadow can indulge its passion, it depends on whether the shadow is active (in control) or passive (wraith is in control)

ACTIVE  INDULGENCE (Shadow is in Control)

When the Shadow indulges its own Passions, its Angst score may decrease.

When your wraith fails its Cantharis Check (See Special Rules) The dark passion Emotion, Likely Target and Behaviour are all decided.

When your shadow is ACTIVELY following those guidelines it may roll ONCE per scene to see how much ANGST it has burned off.

FREE ACTION

ROLL:         RELEVANT DARK PASSION STRENGTH

DIFFICULTY: 12+

SUCCESS:   Every success removes 1 point of Angst up to a maximum of 1 Angst per (indulged) passion strength.

NOTE:         If the shadow follows to the letter the GOAL of their dark passion during the scene they may burn 1 Angst per success on the roll with no

passion strength cap. (This means roleplaying your shadows dark passion is more rewarding than simply following a loose set of

                  guidelines)

PASSIVE  INDULGENCE (Wraith is in Control)

When the wraith is in a scene and its actions or words trigger another character to feeling an emotion related to the shadows dark passions, it is assumed the shadow somehow manipulated the wraith subtly in triggering someone else. When this situation occurs (And we have to take it on good faith that you will recognize when it does), you must roll as follows.

FREE ACTION

ROLL:         RELEVANT DARK PASSION STRENGTH

DIFFICULTY: 12+

SUCCESS:   Every success adds 1 angst to the shadows angst.

NOTE:        Storytellers with access to your sheet may remind you that your shadow has indulged in its dark passion. Though to get the most out of                      wraith roleplay we suggest you get used to self enforcement. Particularly edgy or spikey characters may find they provoke emotions the

shadow likes more frequently than other characters. Also note if your Shadow's dark passion revolves around fear, terror, or hatred,

these feelings will -automatically- occur thanks to the fog.

FETTERS

  • Fetters are important to wraith as they symbolize a tie to the Skinlands. Without a Fetter a wraith can not enter the Shadowlands or Skinlands and may only exist in the underworld.

  • Fetters are the important physical objects/places/people that tie you to the living world.

  • Fetters must exist physically in the real world, they must be something important to your character and most importantly they must be able to be found. If it's inaccessible to average mortal characters living mundane ordinary lives.  it is inaccessible to you and so will deteriorate. For example a sunken or buried treasure can not be a fetter as your average mundane character is not going to be a treasure seeker and find it.

  • Examples of acceptable fetters are The child to whom you never got to say goodbye, the ’63 Stingray you lovingly restored, and the creepy shack in which you were murdered.

  • Fetters can be tied to your passions. For example, "Watch over my girlfriend" passion, can have your girlfriend as your fetter.

  • you have 10 points to spend on Fetters. The stronger the fetter value the less attendance it requires and the more pathos you regain via slumbering in it.

  • There are no DARK FETTERS to worry about like with passions.

  • Fetters can be destroyed by your shadow or by exorcists.

  • New fetters can be created by those with the right Arcanoi, there are also other supernatural who can create fetters for wraith. However the total combined dots of fetters can NEVER exceed 10 points. 10 points is the maximum! Lifeweb and Flux are intended to replace LOST fetters rather than add more.

  • Fetters are used for the process known as slumbering. For more information visit Corpus

Wraiths with unattended (Neglected)  Fetters are at a disadvantage in the deeper Underworld. Distracted by the tug of their Fetters, they are at +1 difficulty per neglected fetter to all rolls in the Tempest and +2 difficulty to all rolls in the Labyrinth (Harrowing's) This is in addition to any difficulty modifiers that already exist in those situations.
