CASTIGATION
If not for Castigate, the Shadow’s power would be unchecked. Those who master this Arcanos learn what drives and feeds the Shadow, as a prelude to learning what weakens its grip. Castigate is a highly personalized Arcanos and those who use it may use physical force, psychology, meditation, sermons, ritual purification, drumming, taunts, sensory deprivation or any of a thousand other methods to fight the Shadow. The exact details depend on the wraith’s tastes and beliefs. Most favour a kind of dialogue based on the target Shadow’s Nature, a process called the Devil’s Dialectic. This Arcanos grants some minimal control over Shadows as well as great insight, and can thus be misused. Keep in mind that dealing with a wraith’s dark side is a dangerous business.

CASTIGATION COMMON
â—‰ SOULSIGHT (COMMON)
The most fundamental power of Castigate is to see the Shadow of another soul, and perhaps even gain understanding of it. A Pardoner cannot
use this art on herself.
SYSTEM:
ROLL: PERCEPTION + CASTIGATE RANK
VERSUS TARGETS ANGST + RESOLVE
SUCCESS:
A Pardoner can sense the target’s Shadow. The more successes scored, the more details learned.

One success indicates the Shadow’s Angst rating relative to the Pardoner’s (weaker, about equal, stronger)

Two successes indicates the Precise Shadow's Angst.

Three Successes Indicates the emotion of the Shadow's highest ranked Dark Passion.

Four Successes Indicates the Shadows Archetype.

Five successes reveals the Shadow’s Archetype, primary Thorn, and Dark Passions as well as all the above.
FAILURE:
The shadow of the target gains 1 Angst
BOTCH:
The user of Soulsight gains 1 Angst and so does the target.​

◉◉ BULWARK (COMMON)
A Pardoner’s knowledge of the Shadow allows her to shield herself and her companions from the effects of a Maelstrom.
SYSTEM:
FREE ACTION
SPEND 1 PATHOS PER MAELSTROM BELL
ROLL: CHARISMA + CASTIGATION RANK
DIFFICULTY: MAELSTROM LEVEL + 10
SUCCESS:
Bulwark shields her and anyone she touches from the force of the Maelstrom and hides them from nearby Spectres. In most cases, this concealment works automatically. If the Storyteller thinks a Spectre has a chance to see the Pardoner, the Pardoner receives +1 to any Stealth or other roll she makes to hide from the Spectre per success she rolled.
FAILURE:
No protection from Maelstrom and Specters can add +1 per dot of highest Angst in party to spot the Wraith.
BOTCH:
As with failure plus everyone in party gains 1 Angst.

◉◉◉ PURIFY (COMMON)
The Pardoner focuses her power on another wraith’s Shadow to weaken it through purification — but the process injures the wraith. Different Pardoners use different methods to accomplish this. The most common include: physical torment; rebukes, insults, sermons, or other speech; singing, dancing, and other performances; occult rituals; and religious chants/prayers. Any and all have been proven effective; it’s simply a matter of the Pardoner’s personal approach.

ROLL: CHARISMA + CASTIGATE RANK VS TARGETS ANGST + RESOLVE
SUCCESS:
Each success reduces the Shadow’s Angst by 1, but also causes 1 bashing damage to the target wraith.
If the wraith's Angst is reduced to Zero the Wraith gains 1 point of Pathos
FAILURE:
The Purifier gains 1 point of Angst
BOTCH:
The purifier and target wraith both gain 1 point of Angst.

◉◉◉◉ GET THEE HENCE (COMMON)
Just as a Pardoner can use her own purity to attack a Shadow, she can raise it as a shield against Spectres, barring them from entering an area (or forcing them to leave an area they already occupy). She doesn’t have to know the Spectres are present to affect them, but for some reason this art doesn’t work against Doppelgangers.
SYSTEM:
NORMAL ACTION:
SPEND 1 PATHOS PER 10 METERS OF WARD.
ROLL: CHARISMA + CATIGAGE RANK
DIFFICULTY: 14+
SUCCESS
Each success equals 1 turn of area protection from Spectres.
FAILURE: Simply means no protection
BOTCH: Means you -think- you have erected a ward, So any spectres entering the area automatically gain 1st attack advantage and a +3 bonus to their first attack rolls.

The height of the Pardoner’s art, Defiance allows him to resist his Shadow’s attempt to take him over — or to help other wraiths do the same.

DIFFICULTY: ANGST + RESOLVE
SUCCCESS:

The pardoner must spend 1 Pathos per success.

Each success reduces the pardoners Angst by 1.
SYSTEM II: (Other wraith)
FREE ACTION (AFTER ANOTHER WRAITHS FAILED CARTHARSIS ROLL)

ROLL: CHARISMA + CASTIGATION RANK VERSUS ANGST + RESOLVE + 3
SUCCCESS:

The pardoner must spend 1 Pathos per success.

Each success reduces the Angst of the wraith by 1.

FAILURE: On either self or another wraith causes the pardoner to gain 1 Angst and Shadow takes the target over as it would.
BOTCH: As with failure but if used on another party the botched attempt triggers a Catharsis roll for the pardoner, potentially creating 2 shadow take overs for the price of one!

A Pardoner tends to study her own Shadow a great deal, and thus learns ways to coax out its power with less risk to herself. Of course, less risk does not mean no risk.
SYSTEM:
Whenever using helping hand the wraith may use Playing With Fire to add additional modifiers.
FREE ACTION:
ROLL: CHARISMA + CASTIGATION RANK
DIFFICULTY: 12+
SUCCESSES:
Every 2 successes allows the player to add one +1 bonus to that normally allowed on the turn, OR reduce the Angst cost of the helping Hand by 1.
NOTE: +6 is absolutely the maximum bonus permitted by helping hand. 1 Angst is the absolute minimum Angst cost permitted.
FAILURE: Gain 1 ANGST
BOTCH: The Helping hand is used as normal, and MUST be used, the ANGST cost for the current turn is doubled!

this art allows a Pardoner to learn a wraith’s deepest secrets by studying and questioning his Shadow. The Pardoner’s power forces the Shadow to divulge reliable information — but only a fool trusts a Shadow completely.

GAIN 1 ANGST
ROLL: CHARISMA + CASTIGATION RANK vs WRAITH COMPOSURE + RESOLVE RANK.
SUCCESS:
For each success achieved, the Pardoner may ask the Shadow one question.
The character’s Shadow must provide a truthful response, but he can shade the truth, omit non-crucial facts, and state half-truths. The more vague or open to interpretation the question is, the greater the Shadow’s leeway to muddle the issue.
FAILURE: Pardoner gains 1 Angst
BOTCH: Pardoner and Targeted wraith gain 1 Angst.

SHADOW RESISTING:
The targeted Shadow may choose to resist the questioning, — after all, not everyone wants to have their dirty laundry hung out for everyone to see. The targeted shadow can resist in the following way.
GAIN: 1 ANGST (Unless shadow is manifested )

◉◉◉ TRIMMING THE BLACK ROSE (INITIATE )
This rare but potent art temporarily deprives a Shadow of one or more of its most dangerous weapons, its Thorns.
SYSTEM:

ROLL: CHARISMA + CASTIGATION RANK Vs ANGST + RESOLVE
SUCCESS:

Each success means the Shadow loses the ability to use one of its Thorns for one turn.

Generally the Thorn turned off is of equal or lesser value than the successes rolled.

If the pardoner knows of two or more of shadows thorns (Through Soulsight or Similar) She may turn off 1 per success for 1 turn per success. So long as the value of each individual thorn turned off does not exceed the number of successes rolled.
FAILURE: The Pardoner gains 1 Angst
BOTCH: The Pardoner and targeted wraith both gain 1 Angst

◉◉◉◉ COOLING THE BLOOD (INITIATE )
With this art, a Pardoner can temporarily weaken (or remove) a Shadow’s Dark Passions, diminishing the fires of cruelty that burn within its heart.

ROLL: CHARISMA + CASTIGATION RANK Vs ANGST + RESOLVE
SUCCCESS:

Each Success determines how many Dark passions maybe cooled

Each Success determines how many turns the shadows dark passions are cooled for.

Each success also determines how many dots the pardoner can reduce the targets shadows dark passions for.

Each Dark Passion reduced to zero removes 1 Angst from the target.

If all Dark Passions are reduced to Zero so too is the Targets Angst.
FAILURE: The Pardoner gains 1 Angst
BOTCH: The Pardoner and targeted wraith both gain 1 Angst

◉◉◉◉◉ PURGE A.K.A Cathartic Reversal (INITIATE )
This art gives a wraith dominated by his Shadow a chance to regain control of himself.
SYSTEM:
FREE ACTION:
SPEND 2 PATHOS (as soon as a companions catharsis roll is demanded)
ROLL: CHARISMA + CASTIGATION RANK vs ANGST + RESOLVE
SUCCESS:

Every 2 success can be given as a +1 catharsis bonus to the wraith about to roll.

This may mean skipping post order to achieve this. So long as the target has NOT rolled their catharsis already this is fine.
FAILURE: The Pardoner gains 1 Angst
BOTCH: The Pardoner and targeted wraith both gain 1 Angst (The target wraith will therefore have the difficulty of Catharsis increased by +1)
LIMITATION: A Pardoner may not use this art on the same wraith more than once per scene.
