TEMPORARY RELIEF
A changeling can invoke the Autumn during a scene to remove bedlam effects for a scene. In such cases they are treated as mortals. When in this state they are cut off from the dreaming and gain 1 point of banality. Nothing can rescue a changeling who is -lost- to bedlam, they can be drugged permanently to suppress the fae nature, this of course is as good as -undoing- a changeling, except enchantment will just reawaken the bedlam driven changeling instead of an angry black hole.

COME UNDONE

  • Permanent Banality cannot be shed easily. Fortunately there are very few scenarios which can cause a changeling to gain permanent banality.

  • There are secret storyteller methods to shed permanent banality too, don't worry too much about this, someone will help you if you reach a point where it threatens your characters existence. Just ask to be sent on a banality shedding quest, there is no reason any character should become undone, unless they are seeking to become undone. Really this can only happen if you the player are choosing for it to happen. Undone are tragic characters, and some stories need a tragic ending, if you desire to do this, then below is how to. If not, there are plenty of ways to avoid this. Changeling staff will be happy to help you.

  • The following information is provided mainly as an option. We don't expect players to become -accidently- undone. It shouldn't be possible in a single night. If your permanent banality reaches 7 or 8, immediately petition a storyteller to send you on a banality shedding quest!

  • Each time your character reaches 10 temporary banality, they gain 1 point of permanent banality. (Characters can roll nightmare to avoid temp banality)

  • Should your character accrue 10 permanent banality (Very hard to do) they become undone.

All fae know the desolate end to which they are doomed. No matter how bright the spark burns, no matter how fierce the spirit, eventually Banality wins. Through a natural Fading or an unnatural Undoing, the Mists can cloud even a fae mind. Most remember nothing of their lives as changelings, waking from what seems like a long dream to lead normal, average lives like any other mortal. Some few retain just enough memory of the Dreaming to be driven mad by it. Though they are in every way outwardly normal, they catch glimpses in the corners of their eyes, they see reflections in mirrors, and they feel the brush of things that aren’t there across their skin. They are the paranoiacs, the conspiracy theorists, the recluses off in the woods. Though they are often misdiagnosed with a variety of mental illnesses, the Undone are not mad. They are like amnesiacs, seeing familiarity everywhere but unable to name it. Kithain try their best to avoid Undone when they are identified. A fae’s presence sometimes triggers bouts of grief, rage, or confusion in the Undone, which can lead to dangerous behaviour. As well, changelings often find that the Undone are unsettling, uncomfortable reminders of the fate which awaits them all.

  • Undone are regular mortals with a Banality of 10.

  • They possess no essence trait.

  • They absolutely cannot be ravaged or inspired (No way to harvest an Undone for Glamour, they are a Glamour void!)

  • They can catch glimpses and flashes of chimerical reality, but they can not perceive it for more than a second at a time.

Enchanting the Undone
Occasionally, a Kithain will take pity on an Undone and attempt to Enchant her. This invariably results in catastrophic failure. The soul of the Undone is broken and maimed, missing half of itself, and latches onto the Glamour of the Kithain’s soul.

As the Kithain touches the undone to enchant them they immediately become caught in the gravitational pull of the undone's soul. To escape the Changeling needs to roll  STRENGTH + BRAWL vs undone's  STRENGTH + BRAWL + 10!

For every round the Undone is in physical contact with the Kithain, the Kithain loses a point of Glamour, as the black hole left where the Undone’s fae soul used to be drains it from the Kithain.  This Glamour cannot be stored or used by the Undone; it fades into ephemera. Should the Undone succeed in draining all of the
Kithain’s available Glamour points, the effect stops, but the Kithain is inflicted with a derangement for a number of days equal to the number of Glamour points they lost.

BEDLAM & UNDOING

  • For completion sakes we have included rules for Bedlam & Undoing. These can be extremely effective means to create tragic and sad stories, or as tools to generate epic quests to save a motely member from their imminent undoing or bedlam. It is intended as a dramatic device and not as a means to kill off characters. Chances are that a character is NOT going acquire 10 permanent Banality, or more nightmare effects than their glamour rank in one sitting, both of these situations would be some exceptionally unlucky rolls or deliberately pressing onwards with high banality or nightmare effects, both of which require an understanding of how those things work anyhow!. So no, you won't be caught by surprise by Bedlam or Undoing.

  • We do not expect changeling player characters to become permanently bedlam ridden or undone.

  • There are numerous ways a storyteller can devise a quest to prevent a changeling from falling into either of these end of character situations.

  • Please ask your changeling storyteller about these ways.

BEDLAM

Changelings dread Banality, but they fear Bedlam. Conventional wisdom among the Kithain describes Bedlam as madness caused by overexposure to the Dreaming. An abundance of time spent in particularly Banal places or without reminders of the character’s fae nature leads to becoming Undone, but saturation in Glamour beyond what the changeling’s mortal seeming can withstand propels the changeling into Bedlam. The road to Bedlam is marked with many signs and warnings, called Bedlam Thresholds, as the chimerical world intrudes on the changeling’s senses and obstructs her interactions with the Autumn realm. Like being stuck in a dream, progressing toward Bedlam leaves the Kithain lucid and in control one moment, but in the next her senses are dominated by the Dreaming.

GAINING BEDLAM: If you ever have more nightmare effects in play than your Glamour Rank you will pass into bedlam at the end of the scene.

The severity of bedlam depends on how many nightmare effects you had in excess of your glamour rank. The Duration and modifiers depend on how many nightmare effects you had in play when bedlam took hold.

NOTE: If you gain bedlam twice then repeat the process even if bedlam effects are still in play. If this new bedlam would be the same level as a previous one choose the next highest entry on the chart that isn't already in play.
